ADHD Assessment in Melbourne

ADHD Assessment in Melbourne

ADHD Assessment in Melbourne

A comprehensive ADHD assessment in Melbourne — a careful look at attention, activity, impulsivity and executive functioning, considered across contexts and across the whole lifespan rather than against a single idea of 'normal'.

Children, teens & adults

DIVA-5 interviews

Strengths-based, not deficit-based

Cognitive assessment included

examples of WHO IS IT FOR

A child who's bright and capable but can't get started, or can't stop.

A teen whose effort and results never seem to match, and who's tired of being called lazy.

An adult — often late-identified — who's read about ADHD and finally recognised themselves.

A family who want language and understanding, whether or not the outcome unlocks funding.

WHAT WE LOOK AT

WHAT WE LOOK AT

Four key elements of an ADHD assessment

Four key elements of an ADHD assessment

We look at the whole person, across settings and across the lifespan — not a single behaviour against a threshold. The report explains what we find in plain language, with recommendations that honour the person's strengths, identity and support needs.

Attention & focus

How attention is directed, sustained, and shifted — including hyperfocus, and the things that quietly pull focus away.

Activity & impulsivity

Restlessness (including internal presentations), movement, and acting before thinking — and how these look across different settings, not just in the room with us.

Executive functioning

Planning, starting, organising, remembering and following through — the skills that quietly run a day, and the ones most worth supporting.

Lifespan & masking history

How the picture looked at four, at ten, and now — and what's been masked or worked around, at what cost. Late-identified adults are a large part of who we support.

WHY PEOPLE COME IN

When should I get an ADHD assessment?

When should I get an ADHD assessment?

None of these on their own mean a diagnosis, and you don’t need a tidy list to get in touch. They’re just the things we hear most often.

None of these on their own mean a diagnosis, and you don’t need a tidy list to get in touch. They’re just the things we hear most often.

Bright, capable, and somehow always behind.

Homework that takes three hours and a lot of tears.

Losing things, forgetting things, running late — despite really trying.

A teenager whose school reports say "not applying themselves."

A young person told years ago they "couldn't have ADHD" because they did well at school.

An adult who's held it together for years and is exhausted from the effort.

HOW IT WORKS

What does an ADHD assessment involve?

What does an ADHD assessment involve?

Our Melbourne ADHD assessment runs over four steps, spread out to keep things calm rather than crammed into a single overwhelming day.

Our Melbourne ADHD assessment runs over four steps, spread out to keep things calm rather than crammed into a single overwhelming day.

1

STEP ONE

A first conversation

A 60-minute intake. For children and teens this is a parent/carer session gathering developmental history; for adults it's a self-referral intake gathering background and history. With your consent we may collect information from teachers, GPs or previous reports. Telehealth available where appropriate.

2

STEP TWO

Diagnostic interviews & testing

A structured diagnostic interview using the DIVA-5 (or Young-DIVA-5), alongside cognitive assessment (WISC-V for children and teens, WAIS-5 for adults) and standardised questionnaires (for example: Conners-4, BRIEF-2) completed across home, school or work. Usually spread across sessions to keep things calm. Telehealth available where appropriate.

3

STEP THREE

The report

A thorough written report that pulls all the threads together — interviews, testing, observations — in plain language, with concrete recommendations for home, school or work, and supports.

4

STEP FOUR

Feedback session

A 60-minute session walking you through the results, what they mean and possible next steps. You can bring whoever needs to be there. You'll leave with the report and a clear summary of options to consider. Telehealth available where appropriate.

TESTS & TOOLS

What tools are commonly used in an ADHD assessment?

What tools are commonly used in an ADHD assessment?

DIVA-5 or Young DIVA-5

DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW FOR ADHD

A structured interview covering how ADHD shows up across the lifespan — at home, school and work — in the person's own words, alongside the people who know them.

Cognitive assessment

WISC-V (CHILDREN) · WAIS-5 (ADULTS)

A full cognitive profile — verbal reasoning, visual problem-solving, working memory, processing speed. It shows how this brain handles information before we interpret anything else.

Conners-4 & BRIEF-2

MULTI-INFORMANT QUESTIONNAIRES

Standardised questionnaires completed across home, school or work — so we see how attention and executive functioning shift with environment and demand.

Developmental history

INTERVIEW & RECORDS

Early milestones, school reports, and previous assessments. ADHD is present from childhood, so the early years matter even in an adult assessment.

CAARS (adults)

CONNERS ADULT ADHD RATING SCALES

For adult assessments, a self-and-observer rating scale focused on adult ADHD — capturing how symptoms show up in day-to-day life now.

Measures are selected to suit age, language, and the question being asked — so the exact set may differ slightly from the list above. We'll tell you what we're using and why.

COMBINED ASSESSMENTS

Combined ADHD, autism and learning disorder assessments

Combined ADHD, autism and learning disorder assessments

ADHD and autism co-occur often, and learning differences frequently sit alongside both. Our Melbourne assessments can look at more than one in a single, coordinated process — sharing one cognitive assessment and one report rather than repeating them, which is why a combined assessment costs less than booking two separately.

ADHD FAQ

ADHD Assessment Questions

ADHD Assessment Questions

Most people start with a short email or phone call. We'll ask a bit about what's prompting the question, then book you in for the first session. You don't need everything figured out before you reach out.

An online "ADHD test" is a self-screening quiz, which is not a formal diagnosis. A formal ADHD assessment is a structured process with a registered psychologist, using standardised measures and information across settings to build a full picture.

Yes. We assess children, teens and adults for ADHD. Adult assessments are common — many people are recognised later in life, often after years of managing without knowing why.

No — you don't need a referral to book an ADHD assessment with us. Some people choose to involve their GP for continuity of care, but it isn't required to get started.

Medicare rebates don't generally cover assessments. Some clients may be eligible for rebated appointments under a referral — check with your GP, and we'll provide an invoice you can submit to private health where applicable.

No. Medication must be prescribed by a paediatrician or psychiatrist who may wish to do supplementary assessments to ensure they are considering your whole medical history when determining which medication to prescribe.

Not sure if an ADHD assessment is right for you?

Tell us a bit about what's prompting the question, and we can talk it through — whether an assessment is the right step, and which one fits. We see children, teens and adults across Melbourne.
