Examples of WHO IS IT FOR

A child whose play, friendships, or sensory world has looked different from early on.

A teen who is exhausted from masking, and whose family only sees the crash at home.

An adult — often late-identified — who has recognised themselves in what they've been reading.

A family who want language and understanding, whether or not the outcome unlocks funding.

WHAT WE LOOK AT

Four key elements of an autism assessment

Four key elements of an autism assessment

We look at the whole person, across settings and across the lifespan — not a single behaviour against a threshold. The report explains what we find in plain language, with recommendations that honour the person's strengths, identity and support needs.

Social communication

How this person connects, reads and sends signals, and manages conversation — including the strategies they have built to look like they are managing.

Interests & patterns

Deep interests, routines, sameness, repetitive movement. We are interested in what these do for a person, not only whether they meet a threshold.

Sensory experience

Sound, light, texture, taste, movement, interoception. Often the most disabling part of daily life and the most straightforward to accommodate.

Masking & lifespan history

What has been camouflaged, at what cost, and how the picture looked at four, at ten, and now. Late-identified adults are a large part of who we see.

When should I get an autism assessment?

When should I get an autism assessment?

None of these on their own mean a diagnosis, and you don’t need a tidy list to get in touch. They’re just the things we hear most often.

Fine at school, falling apart the moment they get home.

Friendships that are wanted, tried for, and hard to keep.

Change of plan, change of teacher, change of anything — and the day is gone.

Sensory overwhelm that gets read as being difficult or fussy.

A young person who was assessed years ago and told they were “too social” to be autistic.

An adult who has always felt one step outside the room and finally wants to know why.

HOW IT WORKS

What does an autism assessment involve?

What does an autism assessment involve?

Our Melbourne autism assessment runs over four steps, spread out to keep things calm rather than crammed into a single overwhelming day.

Our Melbourne autism assessment runs over four steps, spread out to keep things calm rather than crammed into a single overwhelming day.

1

STEP ONE

A first conversation

A 60-minute intake. For children and teens this is a parent/carer session gathering developmental history; for adults it's a self-referral intake gathering background and history. With your consent we may collect information from teachers, GPs or previous reports. Telehealth available where appropriate.

2

STEP TWO

Diagnostic interviews & testing

Diagnostic interviews and observation using the MIGDAS-2 — a sensory-based, conversational interview — alongside cognitive assessment (WISC-V for children and teens, WAIS-5 for adults) and questionnaires completed across home, school or work. Usually spread across sessions to keep things calm. Telehealth available where appropriate.

3

STEP THREE

The report

A thorough written report that pulls all the threads together — interviews, testing, observations — in plain language, with concrete recommendations for home, school or work, and supports.

4

STEP FOUR

Feedback session

A 60-minute session walking you through the results, what they mean and possible next steps. You can bring whoever needs to be there. You'll leave with the report and a clear summary of options to consider. Telehealth available where appropriate.

TESTS & TOOLS

What tools are used in an autism assessment?

What tools are used in an autism assessment?

MIGDAS-2

MONTEIRO INTERVIEW GUIDELINES

A conversational, sensory-based interview process rather than a battery of tasks. It gathers the qualitative detail that makes a report read like a description of a person, not a scorecard.

Cognitive assessment

WISC-V (CHILDREN) · WAIS-5 (ADULTS)

A full cognitive profile — verbal reasoning, visual problem-solving, working memory, processing speed. It shows how this brain handles information before we interpret anything else.

SRS-2 & ABAS-3

MULTI-INFORMANT QUESTIONNAIRES

Standardised questionnaires completed across home, school or work — so we see how social responsiveness and everyday adaptive skills shift with environment and demand.

Developmental history

INTERVIEW & RECORDS

Early milestones, play, school reports, and previous assessments. Autism is lifelong, so the early years matter even in an adult assessment.

PAI (adults)

PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT INVENTORY

For adult assessments, a broader wellbeing measure that helps us understand the whole picture and tell apart overlapping experiences.

Measures are selected to suit age, language, and the question being asked — so the exact set may differ slightly from the list above. We'll tell you what we're using and why.

COMBINED ASSESSMENTS

Combined ADHD, autism and learning disorder assessments

Combined ADHD, autism and learning disorder assessments

Autism and ADHD co-occur often, and learning differences frequently sit alongside both. Our Melbourne assessments can look at more than one in a single, coordinated process — sharing one cognitive assessment and one report rather than repeating them, which is why a combined assessment costs less than booking two separately.

Autism FAQ

Autism Assessment Questions

Most people start with a short email or phone call. We'll ask a little about what's prompting the question, then find a time that works. You don't need a tidy explanation before you reach out.

An online "autism test" is a self-screening quiz, which is not a formal diagnosis. A formal autism assessment is a structured process with a registered psychologist, using standardised, autism-specific measures and information across settings to build a full picture.

Yes. We assess children, teens and adults for autism. Adult assessments are common — many people are identified later in life, often after recognising themselves in what they've read.

No — you don't need a referral to book an autism assessment with us. Some people involve their GP for continuity of care, but it isn't required to get started.

Medicare rebates don't generally cover assessments. Some clients may be eligible for rebated appointments under a referral — check with your GP, and we'll provide an invoice you can submit to private health where applicable. (⚑ Confirm rebate wording with Megan.)

For an NDIS application, a formal Autism assessment can provide the diagnostic evidence that's required.

Not sure if an autism assessment is right for you?

Tell us a bit about what's prompting the question, and we can talk it through — whether an assessment is the right step, and which one fits. We see children, teens and adults across Melbourne.
